Living in Australia

Australia is a beautiful place to live with stunning beaches, exciting cities and an amazing natural environment.

With a strong, resilient economy supporting a secure workforce, Australia offers excellent employment opportunities in the full time and part time workforces. The mineral resources and oil & gas sectors continue to bolster the economy on the local and world markets and Australia is home to many major multinational corporations. Opportunities exist across all industries, including the IT, manufacturing, agriculture, business, education, medical and retail sectors. For students, all Australian capital cities and many regional centres are home to world class university campuses with outstanding facilities.

The Australian people are world famous for their friendly, relaxed attitude to life and their love of a healthy outdoor lifestyle. Leisure activities in Australia include water sports, camping and hiking, barbecues, socialising with friends and vacationing to regional areas. Club sports are also popular with both adults and children, including cricket, swimming, soccer and Australian Rules Football (AFL). Australia has a strong cultural current with major galleries, libraries, museums, theatres and vibrant music scenes in all Australian cities.

Many different cultures combine to form Australian society, with immigrants making up nearly a quarter of the population. The country welcomes people from all corners of the world; and places of worship for every faith and cultural clubs for hundreds of nationalities abound in all Australian states. Australia celebrates its multicultural status officially each year on Harmony Day.

Australia is a colony of Great Britain and recognises the British Queen as its head of state. However, the country is run by an independent, democratically elected government. The currency is the Australian dollar and famous Australian icons include the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Uluru, the Barossa Valley in South Australia and fascinating wildlife such as koalas and kangaroos.

Australia consists of seven states and territories. On the western coast is the state of Western Australia, with the largest land mass of all seven states. The central northern area is the tropical Northern Territory and on the northeast coast is the state of Queensland. The east coast holds the two famous cities of Sydney, New South Wales and Melbourne, Victoria. Between these two states is the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) where the national capital city of Canberra can be found. The central southern area of Australia is South Australia and at the very bottom of the country is the island state of Tasmania.
